The Tech I or Tech II meter must be used to set timing accurately. Base timing is very critical because the PCM assumes the base timing is correct when it sends advance signals to the stepper motor. Top Dead Center offset learn should be -.25 deg. to -.75deg. The 1997-98 year models will reset itself while earlier year models will not. Make sure all four ground wires are connected to surfaces that provide proper ground. The crankshaft gear drive key has also been known to shear off causing the entire engine timing to be off. Very few timing problems have been found to be pump related.

TIMING PROCEDURE (With Tech 1 Scan Tool)

1. Start and idle engine until warm

2. Install Tech 1 scan tool

3. Activate "TDC OFFSET LEARN" in "OUTPUT TEST" / "INJ. PUMP" section of Tech 1 scan tool

NOTICE: If engine stalls during TDC offset activation, * Slightly rotate pump toward the driver side of the vehicle, tighten mounting nuts and repeat step 3.

4. If the learned "TDC OFFSET" is between .0 and -.5 degrees, procedure is complete; if not, * slightly rotate pump * retighten mounting nuts. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until "TDC OFFSET value is between .0 and -.5 degrees.

NOTICE: To achieve a negative number, rotate pump towards driver side; for a positive number, rotate toward passenger side..... 1mm pump movement = approximately 2 degrees

Engine must be shut off prior to rotating the pump, scribe the pump housing and flange before loosening bolts for a point of reference.
