As mentioned in our troubleshooting chart, a major cause for low power is fuel restriction. On older pumps still containing a flex ring, restriction of the return connector by the flex ring particles was a major cause of low power and a loss of power.

There is also a sock filter on the end of the pickup tube that can become restricted by contamination and/or the level of water in the bottom of the tank. Many technicians choose to blow backwards through the return system to check this filter. This practice is NOT advisable because 2 things can happen. If the filter is plugged it can actually be blown off of the pickup tune allowing contamination and water to flow freely into the fuel system. Although there are two more filters to protect the injection pump this can limit the life of the supply pump and fuel filters. The second thing that occurs is the check valve in the pickup tube preventing bled back can be damaged which then results in a hard to start condition.

The rubber fuel line between the lift pump and the steel supply line makes a 90 degree angle and can after a period of time collapse when warm and under a load. When the vehicle is shut off the line sometimes opens back up and the vehicle will crank and run ok until the line collapses again.
