| If the water pump has just been changed and the vehicle cranked but died after a few minutes and will not restart, be sure and check for the proper location of the water pump bolts. If the long bolts are installed in the wrong holes the bolts can contact the injection pump drive gear causing misalignment of the injection pump Head & Rotor which results in Head & Rotor Seizure. The glow plug system is often the cause of hard starting. The glow plugs should stay on for at least 8-10 seconds when the engine is cold. If the time is short check for 1 or more bad glow plugs. This can be done using a continuity checker or a test light. If all glow plugs check good the problem usually lies within the controller. If the vehicle continually starts and dies, finally starts but runs rough after an extended cranking time, or will not start after sitting several hours, then the problem needs to be checked for air. The best way to check for air is to put a clear hose on the return side of the injection pump. If there is no return fuel or the return fuel has air in it the system must be checked for air leaks. Early 6.9L vehicles had a water separator filter on the firewall well known for allowing air in once the drain valve is opened to drain water, it won't reseat and allows air in the system. This filter can be bypassed and the new style water separator can be retrofitted to this application. Another place to check for air is the return line between each injector and the return line cap. Since the return line feeds back into the inlet side of the filter bad orings, fuel lines or return caps may allow air leaks.
